Children will often come to you and to us with something that is worrying them.
Life teaches us that many of the things that cause us the most worry never in fact happen. When we do have problems, worrying is probably the least effective way of dealing with them. BUT it is not easy to let it go or get over it.
Here are some suggestions from our social worker Kate Monaco and others in the Department that may help children to 'fix it ' or ' forget it!'
Help children to write down their worries
Often writing down the things we worry about can make our worries seem less serious. The next step is to write down one or two actions they can take to solve their problems.
Have a worry box
Children can write down the things they know are beyond their control-climate change, the future, war- and put them in a box they can close and put away in a cupboard.
Get help
Encourage them to talk to someone who is a good listener and can help them find a solution- friend, parent, teacher.
Keep busy
When they have lots to think about and do they won't have time for worry. Playing sport, exercising, reading, homework, studying, helping others and playing music are all good ways to distract children from their worries.
Optimism
Children with a positive attitude often find life works out well for them.
Trust themselves
Encourage your child to believe they are good problem solvers. A 'You Can Do It!' attitude. Remind them of the things they worried about and how they managed to get through them or what they worried about that never happened.
